Mountaineering
Progressive mountain skills, 1-2-1 — from valley walks to technical terrain at your pace.
Enquire NowWhat to Expect
Mountaineering instruction is for those who want to move more confidently and safely in mountain terrain — whether that means ascending an exposed ridge, learning to handle a rope on steep ground, or simply reading a mountain environment well enough to make sound decisions when conditions change.
Because every session is 1-2-1, progression is entirely at your pace. There are no groups to keep up with and no syllabus to race through. We start with an honest assessment of where you are and what you want to achieve, then build from there. Sessions are entirely field-based — no classroom, no presentations. You learn by doing, on real terrain, with immediate feedback.
Session content is built around your goals and may include: scrambling technique and body positioning on steep ground, introduction to rope work and basic anchor systems, route selection and terrain reading in mountain environments, weather awareness and decision-making, and emergency procedures. More advanced topics are introduced as your skills develop.
Who It Suits
This instruction is for aspiring alpinists, hillwalkers who want to tackle more technical ground, and anyone preparing for a specific mountain objective who wants expert guidance before committing to it alone. You don't need to have set foot on a mountain before — the programme is designed to develop skills from first principles. Equally, experienced hill walkers who want to bridge the gap between walking and technical mountaineering will find this a practical, efficient way to progress. No prior mountaineering experience is required to start.
Where We Meet
Sessions operate across Wiltshire and South West England. The exact location is agreed with you when booking — typically open countryside, moorland, or mixed terrain appropriate to your experience level.
Transport and access details are confirmed when your session is booked.
Your Instructor
All mountaineering instruction is delivered 1-2-1 by a qualified instructor with personal experience of technical mountain terrain in the UK and beyond.
[Mountaineering Qualification — REQUIRED BEFORE PUBLISH]
Instruction is always delivered personally — never by an assistant or subcontracted coach. Your sessions are planned around your specific goals, and progress is monitored throughout so the challenge level is always appropriate.
Adults Only (18+)
This activity is available to participants aged 18 and over only. No exceptions are made. This is a hard requirement of our operating policy and is not negotiable. By enquiring or booking, you confirm that you meet the minimum age requirement.

Message on WhatsAppFrequently Asked Questions
What fitness level do I need?
You should be comfortable walking for several hours on varied terrain. This isn't a gym-based fitness programme — it's field skills instruction. If you can manage a full day's hillwalk without difficulty, you're fit enough to start. The 1-2-1 format means we progress at a pace that suits you, and sessions can be structured to challenge you without exceeding your current capability.
What equipment is provided versus what should I bring?
Technical equipment such as ropes and harnesses can be discussed when booking — some elements may be provided depending on the session content. You'll need your own warm, layered clothing, waterproofs, and sturdy mountain boots with ankle support. A rucksack with plenty of water, food, and a map and compass is essential. We'll confirm an exact kit list once your session goals are established.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions are flexible-location and typically take place on appropriate terrain across Wiltshire and South West England, chosen to match your current skill level and the objectives of your session. For those working towards more technical terrain, sessions may be arranged further afield — this is discussed when booking.
Is this suitable for someone who has never been to the mountains?
Yes. The programme is designed to build skills progressively from the ground up. We begin with route selection, terrain reading, and weather awareness before introducing technical elements such as scrambling or rope work. Every step is consolidated before the next is introduced. The 1-2-1 format means you never feel out of your depth — we only move forward when you're ready.
How are sessions structured and how long do they last?
A standard mountaineering instruction session runs for a full day (approximately 6–8 hours including travel to the training area). The format is entirely field-based — we learn by doing. Sessions are structured around your specific goals, whether that's building confidence on exposed ground, learning to handle a rope, or preparing for a specific objective. Multi-day programmes can be arranged for those wanting to progress more rapidly.
